Sir Vere Cornwall Bird was the first Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda.  Born in 1910, Bird became the president of the Antigua Trades and Labour Union and was elected to the colonial legislature in 1945.

Sir Vere Cornwall Bird formed the Antigua Labour Party and became the chief minister and premier.

Bird fought for independence for many years and became Prime Minister from November 1981 until March 1994.  He died in 1999.

A massive monument to Antigua and Barbuda's first Prime Minister can be found in St. John's near the Public Market Complex.
